Halloween Festivities

We started off the Halloween season with our tradition night of Hocus Pocus, pizza and a treat. I normally do orange soda floats but saw the BOO shakes and thought we would try them out. They turned out cute, but I think I prefer the floats. They were vanilla ice cream shakes with lots of cool whip on the top.

The following week we carved out our pumpkins! The kids are getting better and better with carving each year. Soon they won't need our help at all! Which is kinda bitter sweet. I didn't get a picture of them completed but Audrey did an owl, Brandon a ghost and Melanie a cat.

The Trunk of Treat was the Saturday before Halloween and the young women were in charge. I had downloaded an app to help make invitations for young women things and was asked to make one for the ward trunk or treat. I don't feel like I'm great at making them since I'm still kinda new to the app, but I think they turned out okay!

Audrey invited her friend Natalia to come with us. Audrey was a pineapple this year for Halloween and loved that she got a cute dress to wear after Halloween was over.

Brandon was Steve from Minecraft. The masks were like $40 to buy online and thought there is no way I'm gonna spend $40 on a box! So we grabbed a free box at Sam's club and I went to town to re create it myself. After MANY hours of meticulous painting I realized that $40 may have been worth it! But it turned out okay, and he loved it and so did many other people.

Melanie was Audrey from Descendants. All of the scepters were sold out or also super expensive so I took a cheap broom we had, spray painted it black and used paper, tin foil and spay paint to make the jewel and ta da! It's not perfect but it worked!
Pete and I love Halloween but never dress up! This year we were determined to do something. I just wore black and had a spider headband. He was supposed to be chicken cordon blue. He had a chicken with a cord on his neck on a blue shirt... but NOBODY got it and he felt embarrassed by it. We also always say we are going to actually decorate our trunk and that still didn't happen this year but hopefully next!

On Halloween I decided we are going to make it a tradition to make my Grandma D's danish dumpling soup. It was passed down to her and a loved recipe in our family. The dumplings were an acquired taste for me, something that I didn't like as a kid but really like them now. My kids and Elliott love it and I love that we have a new tradition. We are accustomed to going over to my parents house every Halloween and eating dinner together with my whole family. My mom would prepare a big stew in a pumpkin, but my kids and Pete don't really like that so this will be our new thing.

Final looks, for the final Halloween event! TRICK OR TREATING!
The pineapple topper had fallen off the headband, and the headband had magically disappeared. I wasn't made aware of this until about 20 min before it was time to go, so we had to get real creative and make a bandanna work.

We had been using a pink tinted conditioner for Melanie's hair for about a week before Halloween. It didn't get quite as vibrant as we were hoping but I didn't want to deal with the sticky spray in paint that just lasts a night. This was a lot of fun and she loved having her hair pink for a couple weeks.
We spent about 45 min trick or treating and had a great time! It was a rainy chilly night but when we went out it had cleared up enough that it wasn't raining on us.

Happy New Year!

We thought we’d bring some new energy to 2021 by completely tearing our house apart and getting our carpets cleaned. The cleaners were scheduled for December 30th, so we pulled everything out of bedrooms and gave the walls and baseboards a good scrub. In order to allow the carpets time to dry we didn’t want to walk on them so we used Elliott’s points and got a hotel up in the Woodlands. We stayed at the Marriott along the waterway and it was beautiful. There ended up being a storm that night which was unfortunate because we weren’t able to walk down the waterway and enjoy the whole scene up there. We ordered Shake Shack from Uber Eats and watched Hook all snuggled up in our beds. It was a perfect evening.  Once we returned home we got to work putting bedrooms back together then later that night celebrated the new year! It’s become tradition for us to do taste tests with the kids blindfolded. We did different flavored oreo’s and ice drinks. We ordered Buffalo Wild Wings and wa...

Good Morning

Our kids don't sleep in. If they make it past 6:30 it's an extremely rare occasion. The problem with this is that Pete and I are not exactly morning folk. We make goals that say we will be in bed before 10pm, but after a week or so we are back to staying up way to late. Having Netflix is not helping either. We love watching documentaries and could watch them all night long. Every morning looks a little something like this. Our kids full of energy and ready to conquer the day, while Pete and I are wanting to kill ourselves.

December

There are a lot of words that could be used to describe 2020. Unpredictable, scary, death, political insanity, isolation, divisive, racial inequality, quarantine, masks etc. etc. It was really rough for us around June-October when we had no idea whether or not Elliott would have a job. Thankfully we were one of the lucky ones that didn't get furloughed. Financially speaking our biggest hit was that overtime was cut. We had big plans of paying off a lot of debt from law school and going on our first family trip to Disneyworld. Without that overtime we make about $2,000 less a month and it's quite a hit, but we are making it work. We canceled our Disneyworld trip and are living paycheck to paycheck but had Elliott been furloughed for an undermined amount of time I don't know what we would have done. I know there are many families in that situation and I wish we were in a position to offer some assistance instead of treading water. I feel very blessed and fortunate for where w...
